All About Humboldt Penguins

A South American penguin, the Humboldt breeds in coastal Peru and Chile. Considered medium sized, Humboldt penguins grow to be 26 to 28 inches tall and weigh 8 to 13 pounds. Their head is black with a white border running from behind the eye, around the black ear-coverts and chin, and joining together at the throat. Their upper parts are a blackish-grey with their under parts being a whitish color. They also have a black breast band that runs down the flanks to their thighs. Found only along the Pacific coast, Humboldt penguins usually nest on islands, on rocky coasts, or in burrowing holes. Currently the Humboldt population is between 3,300 and 12,000. Due to over-fishing, climate change, ocean acidification, and habit destruction they were recently placed on the endangered list.
