All About Tiger Sharks
Ever wondered where tiger sharks got their name? It’s from the tiger-like markings on their dark back. Tiger sharks are born with spotted markings that grow together eventually to become stripes. As the shark ages, the stripes slowly begin to fade. These striped beauties have razor sharp teeth on their upper and lower jaws, which they use to devour just about any sea creatures they can catch alive. Inhabiting both shoreline and open waters, tiger sharks can live on the surface as well as up to 1,200 feet below. Like the great white, tiger sharks have somewhat of a killer reputation. They are highly feared by people because they do attack humans on occasion, but they don’t seek humans to eat. Most often their attacks occur when people are mistaken for another type of sea life. Overall, tiger sharks are quite slow, averaging only 2.4 miles per hour. They can obtain brief blasts of speed but only for a few seconds at a time. The mystery of the tiger sharks life span is still under investigation today.
