Pteranodon was a large pterosaur from the Late Cretaceous Period, around 85 million years ago. Despite often being grouped with dinosaurs, pterosaurs were a separate but related group of flying reptiles. While they did not have feathers like birds and some dinosaurs, some pterosaurs were covered in hair-like structures called “pycnofibers”.

  • Scientific Name: Pteranodon (“Toothless Wing”) longiceps
  • Characteristics: Though pterosaurs flew, this Pteranodon figure is posed at rest on the ground, showing off its large and dynamic crest. It was long debated whether pterosaurs walked using two legs or four, until pterosaur tracks were discovered indicating a four-legged walk.
  • Size and Color: This at-rest Pteranodon figure is about 3 ½ inches high and 4 inches in length, about the size of a muffin (though much less tasty…don’t eat it). Its body is brown above and cream colored below, with black claws on its hands and feet. Its bill is orange with a red tip, and its crest is a vibrant orange with black markings.

Shringasaurus Models

Shringasaurus lived in the middle Triassic Period, around 245 million years ago. Though it was a large prehistoric reptile, growing around 12 feet long, it was not a dinosaur. Its most striking feature is its facial horns, which sprout from its brow like those of Triceratops.

  • Scientific Name: Shringasaurus (“Horned Lizard”)
  • Characteristics: This figure is hand painted to bring out all the scientifically accurate details in this prehistoric creature, from its lizard-like body to its distinctive horns.
  • Size and Color: This Shringasaurus figure is just about 6 ½ inches long and just under 2 inches high. It’s a little longer than a permanent marker. Its coloration is orange-yellow above and a dull yellow below, with brown stripes and spots along its body.
  • The Shringasaurus is part of the Wild Safari® Prehistoric World collection

Edmontosaurus was a large hadrosaur (aka “duck-billed dinosaur”). It lived in the late Cretaceous Period alongside Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex. It is one of the few dinosaur genera to provide many preserved examples of soft tissue (skin). One recent specimen even showcased a soft “crest” on its head, like the comb of a rooster.

  • Scientific Name: Edmontosaurus (“Edmonton [capital city of Alberta, Canada] Lizard”)
  • Characteristics: This hand-painted duck-billed dinosaur figure is sculpted with accuracy based on the latest scientific discoveries, right down to the rooster-like comb on its head.
  • Size and Color: This Edmontosaurus, while not as big as the real thing, is still quite large at just about 10 ½ inches in length. It stands just under 4 inches tall at the highest point on its back. It’s about the size of a standard piece of paper cut in half length-wise. The figure is brown above, with peach-orange on its sides fading to cream colored below. Its hide features brown spots while its face and tail are striped. The distinctive comb atop its head is deep red.

Tyrannosaurus Rex

Tyrannosaurus rex , or “T-Rex”, is one of the most well-known dinosaurs of all time. And with good reason! It’s one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs ever found, growing to over 40 feet long, with teeth that could measure over a foot in length! This Tyrannosaurus figure is much smaller than the real thing, but still full of excellent details (and teeth)!

  • Scientific name: Tyrannosaurus rex meaning ‘tyrant lizard’ and ‘king’
  • Characteristics: This Tyrannosaurus figure is rearing up with its mouth wide open, showing off its renowned chompers. This is a great figure for young dino-fans looking for a detailed and accurate version of the tyrant lizard on a small scale.
  • Size and color: This hand-painted Tyrannosaurus Rex figure measures about 7 inches long and 4 ½ inches tall. It’s around the size of a post card. This toy has been newly remastered for 2019 with an all new paint application, featuring a realistic coloration of brownish gray with dark brown stripes along its back, legs and tail.

Dilophosaurus Models

Dilophosaurus lived in the Early Jurassic Period, 200 million years ago. It grew to over 20 feet in length, which isn’t large when compared to later predatory dinosaurs, although it was one of the largest of its time. It had two distinctive head crests, which may have been used for display purposes.

  • Scientific Name: Dilophosaurus (“Double Crested Lizard”)
  • Characteristics: This Dilophosaurus figurine is hand-painted and scientifically accurate, recreating the figure’s distinct slender shape and its namesake twin head crests.
  • Size and Color: Dilophosaurus is about 6 inches long and 3 inches tall, a bit bigger than a standard 3x5 index card. It’s a brownish-gray above and cream colored on its underside, with alternating stripes down its tail. Its crests are bright orange.

Tyrannosaurus Rex Models

Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest theropod dinosaurs that ever existed. Its scientific name, Tyrannosaurus (‘tyrant lizard’) rex (‘king’) says it all. It lived in what is now western North America in the latest Cretaceous (68-66 million years ago). T. rex went extinct at the very end of the Cretaceous, and so is one of the last dinosaurs to have lived on earth.

  • Scientific Name: Tyrannosaurus rex
  • Characteristics: Tyrannosaurus rex was a large (at least 40 feet), massively built (5-6 metric tons), bipedal dinosaur. The head was huge, and the jaws contained lots of sharp teeth, some at least six inches in length! Each tooth had serrations on both the front and back edges, working like a steak knife to easily cut through the flesh of its prey. Tyrannosaurus rex would have been able to take down and eat any dinosaur it wanted to.
  • Size and Color: This model is 8.75 inches long and 3.25 inches high. It has a dark brown back that fades to a cream colored belly. The tail has faint vertical stripes that would have allowed this carnivore to blend into the surrounding trees and make it harder for their prey to see them approaching.

The postosuchus lived at the time of the first dinosaurs and looked similar to a crocodile, as you can see from the postosuchus from Schleich® Dinosaurs.
The postosuchus was an archosaur and thus a close relative of modern crocodiles. It had strikingly ossified skin and a long, narrow snout. It usually moved on four legs. Sometimes it stood on its hind legs so that it could hold prey with its claws. When the postosuchus from Schleich® Dinosaurs opens its powerful, movable jaw the sharp, dagger-like teeth become visible.

The long, narrow spines of the agustinia make it look so unique that it is impossible to mix up with any other dinosaur. It was also covered with unusual-looking ossified skin plates. As a harmless herbivore it probably needed the spines and plates to protect against other carnivorous dinosaurs. The agustinia from Schleich® Dinosaurs is also always ready to defend itself!

The bestseller from Schleich® DINOSAURS with sophisticated painting.
The king of the dinosaurs was once one of the largest land predators. It could grow to be up to thirteen meters in length and seven meters high. Given its size and mass, the T-Rex was probably not a hunter, but more likely a scavenger. It is presumed that the T-Rex had an exceptional sense of smell, with which it could detect carrion from a great distance.

Carnegie Dinosaur Model Toys:

First released in 1989 the Carnegie Dinosaur Toy Model Collection featured 17 vinyl scale model dinosaurs.  Over the years the Carnegie Collection has produced 49 different species of dinosaurs and other prehistoric life for people’s enjoyment. Today collectors will find 32 different Carnegie replicas on the market as several models have been retired over the years. Sculpted and authenticated under the guidance of the Carnegie Museum of Natural history in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, each model is carefully hand-painted ensuring no two are exactly alike. Before 1996 the models were cast from a gray material, covered with paint corresponding to the base color of the finished product, then the hand painted fine details were added. However, in 1996 Carnegie’s process was changed and the models were cast from material the color of the animal’s base color then the finer details were painted directly on the material giving the replicas more detail and less shine. With a majority of the models built on a 1:40 scale, most replicas in the Carnegie collection are between 3 and 24 inches in length. Each reproduction features an informational hang tag that provides scientific details collected about the animal the represented by the model. Appealing to children and adults alike, the Carnegie collection is both fun and educational. These awe inspiring replicas make excellent decorations for the home or office. Science teachers love using these brilliant reproductions as teaching tools. Kids are intrigued by these amazing replicas and are sure to want to know more about the animals they depict.  All in all the possibilities are endless.
