Description

Septarian Nodule

also known as mud balls

9" x 6" x 5"

13 lbs

These are formed from the slime at the bottom of the sea during the Cretaceous period 50 to 100 million years ago.

The process which created the septarian nodules remains a mystery.  Some say dehydration of clay, others say expansion of gases produced by the decay of organic matter.  The brittle fracturing of the ball by either earthquakes or compaction allows the minerals to then seep into the Mud Ball forming the beautiful crystals.

The often consist of a single-dominant mineral inside the geode. Calcite.  Other minerals can be present depending on the environmental conditions which created them: aragonite, iron, copper, limestone, bentonite, gypsum, and even pyrite - also known as fool's gold.

Occasionally some of the fossilized shells of the animals which started the formation of the rocks are noticeable in the rocks.
