All About Sawfish
Sawfish, known also as Carpenter Sharks, are a member of the ray family. Famous for its long and toothy snout, the sawfish can grow up to 23 feet in length. The “teeth” that line its saw like snout and in fact not teeth at all; instead they are modified scales. The jaws, however, are lined with thousands of small dome-shaped teeth. Worldwide there are 8 species of saw fish with 5 found in Australian waters. This unique fish has the ability to move from salt to freshwater at will. With a flat body and head, the sawfish is a bottom dweller. Slow and docile, they prefer resting on muddy bottoms in shallow water. After a massive accidental capture in nets, the sawfish has become an endangered species that people, especially those in Australia, are fighting to protect.
