All About Great White Sharks
When you think of shark movies, what’s the first one to pop into your head? JAWS! The famous shark in the Jaws series, like in many other shark attack movies, is in fact a great white shark. With 3,000 sharp teeth the great white shark makes the perfect ferocious predator! With a torpedo-shaped body, pointed snout, and crescent-shaped tail, this fearsome fish is the terror of the ocean. Averaging 12 to 16 feet long and weighing in up to 7,000 pounds these monsters are not to be reckoned with. Its grayish top side and white underbelly add to its stealth because great whites attack from below their prey and their gray topside allows them to blend in with the water. When it comes to feeding, even with all those teeth, great whites don’t chew their prey. They simply rip it into mouth size pieces and swallow it whole. When it comes down to shark attacks, research has taken away some of the great whites killer reputation. Of the 100 shark attacks reported each year, great white sharks are responsible for 30 to 50 of those attacks. However, only 10 to 15 of these attacks result in death as most humans are able to escape a shark attack after the first bite. A lost limb is more likely the result of the attack. No one is positive about the great white sharks life span, but it is estimated to be around 100 years!
